Trump says Xi understands ‘consequences’ if China invades Taiwan
President Donald Trump said Xi Jinping understands the consequences if China invades Taiwan, while refusing to specifically say the US would defend the island, according to an extract of a CBS News interview broadcast on Nov 2.
Mr Trump said Taiwan “never even came up as a subject” when he met the Chinese president in South Korea on Oct 30 for their first face-to-face meeting in six years.
Asked on CBS’s 60 Minutes whether he would order US forces into action if China moved militarily on Taiwan, Mr Trump said: “You’ll find out if it happens, and he understands the answer to that.”
But Mr Trump declined to spell out what he meant in the interview conducted on Oct 31 at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, adding: “I can’t give away my secrets. The other side knows.”

Malaysian rapper Namewee has denied using drugs and any involvement in the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh, saying the truth will emerge when police reports are released in the coming months.
The 42-year-old posted a statement on Instagram on Nov 2 after what he described as “unsubstantiated news reports” linked him to the death of Hsieh Yu-hsin, also known as Iris Hsieh, who was found dead in a hotel bathtub on Oct 22.
“I haven’t used drugs, nor have I been carrying any. At most, I’ve been drinking more lately. Believe it or not, the truth will come out when the police report is released, which should take another two or three months,” he wrote in Chinese, according to Malaysia news outlet Sin Chew Daily.

German authorities said on Nov 2 they had arrested a 22-year-old Syrian man in Berlin suspected of preparing a “jihadist” attack, without giving details of the alleged plot.
The suspect, arrested on Nov 1 in the capital’s southern Neukoelln district, appeared before an investigating judge on Nov 2 and was ordered remanded in custody.
He is suspected of “preparing an act of serious violence against the state” as well as “spreading propaganda material of anti-constitutional and terrorist organisations,” said a joint statement from Berlin police and prosecutors.

A 32-year-old British man was the sole suspect accused of a mass stabbing on a train in England, after another man arrested in the case was released on Nov 2 with no charges.
British police said the knife attack that put 11 people in hospital was not a terrorist incident. A 35-year-old man who had been arrested earlier was released after officers concluded he was not involved in the attack.
By late on Nov 2, five of the injured had been discharged from hospital. Among those still being treated was a member of the train crew who tried to stop the attacker and was in a life-threatening condition, police said.

India’s agonising wait for a maiden Women’s World Cup title finally came to an end as Harmanpreet Kaur and her teary-eyed teammates clinched the trophy by beating South Africa in a dramatic final at the DY Patil Stadium on Nov 2.
Their 52-run victory before a full house was the perfect culmination of a campaign, which was nearly derailed after three defeats in a row, including one against South Africa, in the league phase.
Kaur’s team pulled off a record chase in their semi-final against defending champions Australia to reach the final against a South Africa side also gunning for their maiden 50-over World Cup title.
